The experimental group ("N" = 56) received SAILS instruction, whereas the control group ("N" = 55) received traditional instruction. The fifth-grade students ("N" = 111) who were enrolled in this study were divided into an experimental and a control group. The goals of this study were to build on students' learning processes for basic and composite solids and employ Google SketchUp, an Internet resource tool, to develop and implement surface-area instructional and learning strategies (SAILS) for composite solids, and then measure its effect on learning achievement and attitudes. Determining the surface areas of composite solids involves complex calculations and advanced spatial concepts. Schools interested in getting Google Sketchup Pro can contact the Galway Education Centre online.Providing instruction on spatial geometry, specifically how to calculate the surface areas of composite solids, challenges many elementary school teachers. “We also know how dedicated and driven many of our teachers are and to be in a position to offer them a world-class programme like Google Sketchup Pro at no cost to the school is wonderful,” he said. “Through our other projects like The FIRST LEGO League and The CREST Awards, we know just how capable and talented Irish students are. “We are thrilled to be working together with Google on this project,” said Bernard Kirk, director of the Galway Education Centre.

A number of schools have already signed up for a licence for the software. Students and teachers can also share their projects, resources and images with others online.Īs part of the new agreement, the Galway Education Centre will distribute the programme for free to all interested schools across the country.

It can be used to design objects ranging from kitchen utensils to buildings. They can import drawings, photos, aerial images and other data and can then use the application’s tools to create 3D models. The application lets students create 3D models from scratch or by using existing data.

The Galway Education Centre has signed a contract with Google to distribute 3D modelling application Google Sketchup Pro for free to all interested Irish primary and secondary schools.
